Dear NASA,
Thank you for presenting our
school with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to communicate with Commander Shane
Kimbrough and Flight Engineer Peggy Whitson on
the International Space Station. Because of this experience, the concept of space
exploration for my students has shifted from being an abstract concept only to
be viewed on TV and in movies, to something much more personal and within reach.
After the downlink with the ISS, I took an informal survey to see what my
students would like to be when they grow up. On a typical day, the results
would be pretty evenly split between teacher, police officer, and doctor. Not
so anymore! I am here to report that 100% of my class would now like to become
astronauts and work for NASA! Thank you for inspiring my second-graders to
dream big. They’ll be graduating college in 2031, so be on the lookout!
